What is a Prosthodontist?

Hello, my name is Dr. Thomas Suranyi, and I’d like to welcome you to the prosthodontic section of our Merrimack Smiles website. As a prosthodontist, I’m often asked the question “what is a prosthodontist?” There are eight dental specialties, the more commonly known ones are oral surgery and orthodontics, but prosthodontics is also one of the eight specialties recognized by the American Dental Association.

After finishing four years of dental school, a dentist may apply to a prosthodontic residency program either right out of dental school, or after a few years of dental practice. A prosthodontic residency is three years in length, and leads to a master’s and certificate in prosthodontics.

During residency, a prosthodontist will learn to specialize in various prosthetic techniques and the completion of complex cases requiring different specialists to work together to complete your dental treatment. In learning how to manage comprehensive care, prosthodontists learn to become experts in using crowns, bridges, implants, partial or complete dentures and porcelain veneers. By developing and managing complex cases, a prosthodontist becomes your team leader and helps ensure a smooth and comfortable treatment.

I, and the team at Merrimack Smiles, are focused on making sure that whatever treatment you may need, will be done in a pain free, comfortable and relaxed environment. We encourage you to look through our website and send us any questions you may have.

Veterans Affairs Provider

Hello, my name is Dr. Thomas Suranyi, and our team here at Merrimack Smiles is honored to be a veterans preferred provider. The opportunity to help our nations veterans is one that we take very seriously, and we aim to provide the highest quality care in a pain free, comfortable and relaxed environment.

As a former Lieutenant-Commander in the United States Navy, I was fortunate enough to see, first hand, what our nations active duty military personnel go through, and the sacrifices they make to keep our nation safe. I consider it a privilege to be able to help those who have sacrificed for our country.

Please, feel free to look through our website, and don’t hesitate to call or send us an email, with any questions you may have.

Meet Dr. Suranyi

Hello, my name is Dr. Thomas Suranyi. I’d like to thank you for taking the time to visit the prosthdontic section of our Merrimack Smiles website, and if you haven’t already, I’d like to encourage you to look through our main webpage at www.merrimacksmiles.com.

I wanted to take a moment and introduce myself. Born and raised in Cornwall, Ontario, I moved to the United States for university. After four years at the University of Rochester, in Rochester, NY, I enrolled in dental school at Columbia University, in New York City, where I finished my dental training, and spent an additional year completing an Advanced Education in General Dentistry program. After dental school, I moved to North Carolina where, after three years, I finished my residency in Prosthodontics at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Following residency, I began a four year commitment with the United States Navy, and was stationed at the Marine Corps Recruit Depot on Parris Island in South Carolina.

After years of moving up and down the eastern seaboard, I’ve finally settled down, and now call New Hampshire home. In my spare time I like to read, cook, and enjoy everything the outdoors has to offer. When not thinking about patients, I spend my spare time with my son and daughter.

Thank you again for visiting the prosthodontic section of our Merrimack Smiles website, and I hope to see you in our practice.
